Warren “Stan” MacLafferty, 86, of College Place, WA passed away on April 15, 2016 at his home.
Born in College Place, Stan was raised in the radio business as his father, Laurence, was the chief engineer for radio station KUJ for over 25 years. During WWII Stan helped out by taking his own shift at the station becoming the youngest radio operator west of the Mississippi. Stan dropped out of high school to join the Navy and served for almost four years.
In 1954 Stan worked on the DEW (Defense Early Warning) line at Point Barrow, Alaska for Western Electric. He returned to Walla Walla and married Esther Quistberg in 1955. Stan worked for many years at Bell Telephone and later had his own machine shop. He went back to his roots and was a radio engineer at KHIT/KSXT in Walla Walla. In the early 1980’s he and Esther and their two youngest children moved to the Puget Sound area where he worked for radio station KBRD/KWJZ in Seattle. In 2001 he and Esther returned to Walla Walla where Stan worked part time for radio station KUJ in Walla Walla and its affiliated stations in Tillamook, Oregon and Gallup, New Mexico. He retired completely in 2010.
Stan is survived by his wife of 60 years, Esther, and six children: Charlot Barney of Seattle, Celia Martin of Walla Walla, Carla MacLafferty of Seattle, Colleen MacLafferty of Seattle, Conan MacLafferty of Walla Walla and Claudia Borgens of Lowden, as well as four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Laurence and Ethel MacLafferty and sister, Bette Geary.
