Walter Howard Zier, 90, passed away August 19, 2014 at his daughter’s home in Rexburg, Idaho. Walter was born in Odessa, Washington on February 5, 1924 to Jacob Zier and Maria K. (Starkel) Zier.
On July 6, 1947, he and the love of his life, Betty Jo Chapman were married in Walla Walla, Washington. Together they had two children: Jim Zier of Boise, Idaho and Devin Woods of Rexburg, Idaho. Walter worked many years for Standard Oil and Union Oil of California and retired as a manager for the Washington State Liquor Control Board in Walla Walla.
In addition to his two children he is survived by two sisters: Evelyn Louise (Carl) Schmidt; Carol (Dale) Steindorf; 8 grandchildren: Chad Zier of Boise, Idaho; J.Craig (Taryn) of Lake Forest Park, Washington; Jena (Jeremy) Burkman of Boise, Idaho; Jeffrey Zier of Boise, Idaho; Krista (Chris) Johnson of Woodland, Washington; Kari (Derrik) Oborn of Tooele, Utah; Joseph (Courtney) Woods, Eldorado Hills, California; and Britta (Stuart) Black of West Jordan, Utah; 3 great grandsons, 10 great granddaughters; Step Grandfather to: Gary and Patricia Woods of Gilbert, Arizona; Michael and Christene Woods of Austin, Texas; David and Alison Woods of Chico, California; Carol and Edwin Ivey of Houston, Texas; Roger and Angie Woods of Provo, Utah; Julie and Blake Stock of Pasco, Washington; Susie and Gary Call of Huntington Beach, California; 28 step great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters: Elsie Elizabeth Reiswig; Dorothea Helena Curtis; and Marie Katherine Cannon. Brothers: Arthur George Zier; David Zier; Harry Jacob Zier; Robert Edward Zier; and William Theodore Zier. Sister-in-Law Wilma Jean Lowery. Daughter-in-law, Jill LaVerne Zier and son-in-law, Jerry Woods.
The Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday August 25, 2014 at the Blue Mountain Community Church, 928 Sturm Ave., Walla Walla, Washington. Reverend Jim Snyder will officiate. Following interment there will be a reception at the Blue Mountain Community Church. A viewing will be available at Herring-Groseclose Funeral Home, 315 W. Alder St. on Sunday, August 24, 2014 from 1 till 5 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Blue Mountain Community Church, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day-Saints Perpetual Education Fund or Walla Walla Christian Aid Center through the funeral home.
