Vernon Olaus Filan

Vernon “Vern” Olaus Filan, 92, of Walla Walla, passed away Tuesday, January 31, 2023.

Vern was born October 20, 1930, in Hay, Washington, to Olaus and Minnie Filan. He was the sixth of twelve children. The family moved to Walla Walla in 1942.

In 1948, Vern graduated from Walla Walla High School, where he excelled in shop and carpentry. He then farmed wheat and peas around Mill Creek and Dixie with his cousin, Arne Filan, for 44 years and with his son, Ron, for many years. After retiring in 1995, Vern farmed part-time with Ron until 2006. In addition to farming, Vern enjoyed woodworking and built multiple homes. He also designed and built farm equipment and machinery.

In 1951, Vern married the love of his life, Evelyn Miller, at the First Assembly of God in Walla Walla. They were married for 71 years and were devoted parents to four children: Barbara Goin, Donnette Filan, Teresa Thonney, and Ron Filan.

Vern was committed to faith, family, and farming. He generously gave his time and talents to his family and church.

Vern is survived by his wife, Evelyn, four children, ten grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and three siblings.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, February 18, 2023, at 11:00 am, at the First Assembly of God, 1919 Fern Ave., Walla Walla, with Pastor Terence Hall and Reverend Mark Koonz co-officiating. Graveside service will be Friday, February 17, at 1:30 pm, at Mountain View Cemetery, 2120 S. 2nd Ave., Walla Walla.
