It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Vance Kleyn, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. Vance departed this world on May 20, 2026, at the age of 79, leaving behind a legacy of love, service, and adventure. He was born on January 7, 1947, in Yakima, Washington, to Neil and Eileen Kleyn, who preceded him in death.
Vance's life was a testament to resilience and dedication. After receiving his GED in 1966, Vance answered the call to serve his country by joining the Army. He bravely served in the Vietnam War for two years, embodying the patriotism and quiet strength for which he would be known throughout his life. Upon his return, Vance found a new calling with the US Forest Service, initially as a firefighter. His unwavering commitment and integrity led him to become a Federal Law Enforcement Officer, a role he held with honor until his retirement.
Vance's love for the great outdoors was unparalleled. An avid hiker, he spent countless hours clearing trails in the Umatilla National Forest, a testament to his enduring connection with nature and the Forest Service. He was passionate about hunting in all its forms -- muzzle-loader, modern, and archery -- and particularly enjoyed the art of fly fishing. His enthusiasm for motorcycles saw him actively participating in various clubs, riding alongside kindred spirits who shared his zest for life on the open road.
On July 22, 1978, Vance married the love of his life, Mary Christiano. Together, they built a beautiful life in Walla Walla, Washington, for nearly 47 years, raising their beloved daughter, Keely. Vance was a pillar of quiet strength and support, always willing to lend a helping hand. While he was a man of few words, those who knew him well understood that once he found common ground, he could engage in conversations that would last for hours.
Vance is survived by his cherished wife, Mary; his daughter, Keely, her husband, Guy, and their two children, Wyatt and Eloise, who brought immense joy to his life. He also leaves behind his sister, and a host of cousins and friends who will miss his presence dearly.
A celebration of life to honor Vance's remarkable life will be held on July 11, 2026, at 5:00 PM at the Fort Walla Walla Museum, located at 755 Myra Road, Walla Walla, WA 99362. The family invites all who knew Vance to join them in celebrating his life. They encourage everyone to wear camo, plaid, patriotic themed or Forest Service green attire. The family welcomes you to share memories and stories that capture the essence of Vance's enduring spirit. A BBQ dinner will be served.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider spending time in nature, clearing a trail, or casting a line, in memory of Vance's love for the natural world and the peace he found there. His legacy lives on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know and love him.
