Walla Walla

Listen to Obituary

Tonie was born to Anthony Clarence and Louise (Fetters) Brown in Silver City, NM, on November 16, 1942. She was the second of five sisters: Gerry, Betty, Gail, Sue, and one brother, Floyd Wayne, who died at birth. She learned how to play the upright bass guitar when she was very young, playing in her father’s band. She wasn’t able to reach the strings, so she had to stand on an apple box to play. She moved back and forth to Walla Walla several times for her father’s job. She attended WA-HI and graduated in 1960.

She met the love of her life, Wesley Carney, and they were married on May 5, 1961. They just celebrated 65 years of marriage. In April of 1962, she became a mother to a son, Daniel. A few years later, she had a daughter, Carla. She started working as a Bank Teller at Old National Bank and worked her way up the ranks to Branch Manager. She retired in 1988 and spent time fishing, camping, traveling, and enjoying spending time with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed playing cards and cooking with the family. She has been active in the Lady Elks, Juliettes, Girl Scouts, Bowling & Softball Leagues, and the March of Dimes. She coordinated a phone-a-thon fundraiser at ONB for the March of Dimes.

She is survived by her husband, Wes; daughter-in-love, Brenda; five grandchildren: Shannon (Keith) Schaff, Keli (Rorry) Little, Marc Carney, Sean Siders, and Dani Siders; three great-grandchildren: Reese, Lana, and Lexie Schaff. She was also loved by numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her children, Dan Carney and Carla Freeman; her parents, Anthony Clarence and Louise Brown; her sister, Betty Zaro; her brother-in-law, Lanny Flynn; and her mother-in-law, Grace Carney.

Her memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at 10:00 AM at Calvary Chapel Walla Walla, 2139 Fern Ave, Walla Walla, followed by a graveside service and reception.
