Suwong Wongsuwan, MD

Dr. Suwong Wongsuwan (Wong), 65, of Walla Walla, Washington, passed away at home on Sunday, September 13, 2026.

He leaves behind a life he built with enthusiasm and people he loved fiercely. Suwong met the world with an open hand and an open mind, always ready for a new golf course, a new hiking trail, a reef to snorkel, or above all, new food, especially anything homemade by his wife, Wendy. At home, he kept a garden and was rarely without his camera, always capturing the beauty of life that surrounded him. He and Wendy played golf and tennis, biked, and traveled the world together, always eager to immerse themselves in each community they found. He approached life the way he approached medicine: with curiosity, humility, and a belief that showing up for people, fully and without judgment, was one of life's main purposes.

Suwong earned his medical degree with honors from Prince of Songkhla University Faculty of Medicine in 1986 and completed a residency in orthopedic surgery in Thailand before relocating to the United States to retrain in internal medicine and cardiology. He completed his internship at Meharry Medical College, and his residency and fellowship at Hahnemann University Hospital of Drexel University. He became board-certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease, and Nuclear Medicine, and in 2001 he began his practice at Providence St. Mary Medical Center in Walla Walla, Washington where he would spend the next 25 years as a cardiologist and a core member of the medical staff at the Providence St. Mary Heart and Vascular Center, the capstone of a medical career spanning four decades. When the hospital opened its newly renovated cardiac catheterization lab in 2025, he spoke about why the work mattered to him: it wasn't only about bringing a person's life back, but about restoring their quality of life. Patients remembered him as knowledgeable, direct, and endlessly generous with his time and care, the kind of doctor people would drive a hundred miles to see.

Outside the clinic, Suwong was a tinkerer at heart, the kind of man who could talk for hours about how something was made, tune and play his guitar, and stay just as fascinated by the mechanics of the world as by the vastness of the universe beyond it. He often marveled at how small each of us really is against that scale, and how far a small act of kindness can ripple outward into someone else's life. He lived that belief through his commitment to the community by supporting charitable organizations including the YWCA, the Christian Aid Center soup kitchen, the Walla Walla Symphony, and SonBridge, among others. His giving legacy will be carried on by his wife, Wendy. Even with his busy practice, Suwong found time to educate the next generation of healthcare providers by serving as a mentor to medical students from Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences, as well as to pharmacy residents.

Suwong is survived by his wife of 32 years, Wendy; his sisters, Tewee Wongsuwan, Wallapa Wongsuwan, Pawinee Wongsuwan, Yuwared Bhumiwat, Wannee Poomee, Vena Klongtruatroke, Sriwara Zangke, and Kitti Amphon; his sister-in-law, Winnie Henderson, and brother-in-law, Bill Henderson; his nephews, Andrew Henderson and Michael Henderson.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Courtyard by Marriott Walla Walla, 550 W Rose St., Walla Walla, WA 99362, on Friday, September 18, 2026, beginning at 4:30 PM.

In his own words, Suwong believed in moving, whether it be across the ocean or simply across the river, and in the humility and gratitude that come from trying, tasting, and wandering without fear. He lived each day to the fullest and with purpose, and everyone who knew him carries a little piece of that spirit forward.
