Sidney Wayne Ross, "Bill", unexpectedly passed away on September 24, 2023. Bill was born on March 17, 1928, in King Hill, ID, to Chester Bryan Ross and Emma Johnson.
In 1949, Bill began his career as a Federal Employee, which took him to The Dalles, OR, where he met the love of his life, Mae. They have enjoyed 58 years of marriage to each other and are sealed together for eternity. Bill and Mae have five children: daughters, Vicki Gerber (husband Jack, sons, Charles (wife Karen) and Brian (wife Nataly) and Taryn Grant (husband Warren), sons, Mark Ross (sons Jonathan (wife Megan), Kristopher (wife Katie) and Dustin Ross), Mike Ross (wife Denise, son Aaron Ross, daughter Cassie Ross), and David Ross (wife Sherry, sons Jeremy Ross and Cody Ross (wife Ashley).
Bill loved all outdoor mountainous activities, including hiking, fishing, and camping with his family and with the Scouts as a Boy Scouts Leader. Bill held many callings in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but one of his favorites was coaching church ball. He also coached local Little League and basketball teams. During his 36.5-year career as a Federal Employee, Bill, Mae, and their children lived in many places, including Nigeria and Bangkok. Still, his favorite job began after he retired when Bill and his wife became managers at Lake Hotel in Yellowstone for many summers. Bill and Mae served two missions, one in Liberty, MO, at the Historic Liberty Jail and one in Peoria, IL. Both missions were for two years. In 2008, Bill and Mae returned to Walla Walla to allow Mae to care for her brother-in-law and then for her sister, and then made Walla Walla their home. Bill will always be known for his leadership qualities and his excited, bright smile that he loved to share. Mae has always said that if he had a tail, he would wag it!
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Ronald Ross, and granddaughter, Jody Methin. Bill is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, as mentioned above; four great-grandchildren; his nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and -nephews, along with many beloved friends.
The Ross family would like to thank the ambulance crew who so quickly responded to care for Bill, the attentive front door security guard, and the Providence St. Mary's staff in E.D. and ICU for all the loving care shown to Bill and his family during this difficult time.
Memorial dedication may be made to the Christian Aid Center, where Bill and Mae spent many days volunteering and creating wonderful friendships and memories.
There will be a viewing and visitation on October 6, 2023, from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., at the Herring Funeral Home.
