Sherri was born to Harold and Ruby Wodtli in Tonasket, WA, on August 19, 1947. After being diagnosed with fast-growing cancer on August 29, 2020, while having surgery at St. Mary's, she opted to spend the short time left with family and friends at her home she loved so much for over 50 years. She passed away peacefully on September 24, 2022, with her husband, Fred, and Grandson, Dylon, at her side.
Sherri moved to the Walla Walla area in the 1960s, where she met and married the love of her life, Fred, on January 4, 1970. They spent the next 52-plus years together raising their three wonderful sons: Fred Jr. (Alison), Greg (Lyndy), and Christopher (Eliza).
Fred was a Police Officer with the Walla Walla police dept at the time they were married until he retired as a Captain in 1998. Fred always said she was the perfect "Cops wife," always supportive and never complaining about his assignments or shift hours.
During their early years of marriage, they enjoyed camping and canoeing at Jubilee Lake, where they were the first Camp Hosts. They received a Certificate of Appreciation from the U.S Dept. of Agriculture for their volunteering and saving the life of a drowning canoeist during their first year there as hosts.
In the 1980s, she owned and managed the Baker's Dozen Donut shop located at 9th and Rose, where she made numerous lifetime friends.
Sherri served on the Board of the Salvation Army and was a noon duty aide at Green Park school for many years; she was a Past President and current Trustee for the VFW Post 992 Auxiliary, where she was known and praised for baking her famous Pineapple Upside-Down cakes and bringing them to their functions.
Her favorite pastime for the last several years was playing Bingo at the VFW on Monday and Tuesday nights. After her son, Greg was killed, the VFW had a special table made for her with his K-27 call sign on it. They also placed some of her favorite Bingo items on the table during the two sessions after her passing.
Sherri was a very caring and happy person who loved every child she met. She was known as "Aunt Sherri" to all the children of her friends and family. Sherri was often called the life of the party, and her favorite saying was "It's five O'clock somewhere' which is etched on her tombstone. She was the perfect hostess during the parties at their backyard pool and, for many years, taught numerous children their first swimming lessons.
On May 5, 2015, tragedy entered the life of the family when their son Greg was shot and killed while on duty as a Sergeant of the Coeur d'Alene Police Dept. She was so thankful for the strong support given to her by her family and by the citizens of Coeur d'Alene and Walla Walla during that time and since.
Besides those mentioned above, Sherri is survived by her husband, Fred; sister, Shannon (Dan) Kilness; half-brother, Greg Meacham; grandchildren: Elizabeth, Danyelle, Dylon, Gemma, Aiden, Benson, and Jordynn Blu Walker; nieces, Pam (David) Drumheller, Tia Pacotti, and Cathy Moore; nephews, Lester, Ron (Kris), Jarrod Greene, and Richie Webb. Also surviving her are very special people: daughter-in-law, Jenifer Brumley and her husband, Kevin Walker, Patty Strange and her husband, Craig.
Preceding her in death, besides her son, Greg, are her niece, Dawna Greene, and half-brother, Roger Meacham.
Sherri did not want a funeral or graveside service but just a Celebration-Of-Life at the VFW, to be held Saturday, October 15, 2022, beginning at 11:00 AM.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Christian Aid Center or the VFW Post 992 through the Herring Groseclose Funeral Home, 315 W. Alder St., Walla Walla, WA 99362. In addition, friends and family are invited to sign the online guestbook at www.herringgroseclose.com.
