Richard Morton Black

February 3, 1958 — September 3, 2022

Walla Walla

Rick Black unexpectantly passed away on September 3, 2022, doing what he loved the most, being outdoors on his “farm,” working and playing hard. He lived his life to the fullest and how he wanted.

He was born in Walla Walla, Washington, on February 3, 1958, to Richard L. and M. Janette Black and was welcomed by three older sisters who were his playmates, confidants, and tormentors his entire life. Family was his biggest treasure.

Rick graduated from Walla Walla High School in 1977. His group of buddies dubbed him “Snake” and “Wild Man .” After graduation, he worked for 60 Minute Photo, Washington State Liquor Store, and Washington State Penitentiary. In 2015, he attained a Pharmacy Assistant License and worked for Rite Aid. His love of collectibles, antiques, and bargains led him to start his own business- Janette’s Antiques Replacements and Collectables. He was skilled in seeing the value in items, refurbishing them, and making a profit in resale.

Rick married his soul mate, Samuel McKay, on December 31, 2015. Sam was a member of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation. They loved attending the many celebrations and ceremonies of Sam’s culture. Sam died on November 19, 2018.

After living in Kennewick, Washington, for several years, he moved back to Walla Walla to be near his parents and to live on the “Farm” above the Snake River. It was Ricks happy place. The sunrises and sunsets were often his time of meditation and filled him with gratitude. The solitude he found there soothed his soul.

Rick was gregarious, funny, and took up more than his share of a room. He had a big heart and never failed to help a friend, family, stranger, or animal who was in need. His absence will be felt by many.

Rick is survived by his parents, Richard and Janette Black; sisters, Sharie (Jerry) Ledford and Kathleen (Tom) Harding; his aunt, Linda (Sonny) Reyburn; and numerous adored nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his husband, Sam McKay, and sisters, Jennifer (Steve) Board and Edna (George) Downing.

Our hearts are torn. We miss him more than words can express but believe he has found peace and love in the arms of departed love ones.

A celebration of life will be held for family and friends at the College Place Presbyterian Church on Saturday, October 29, 2022, between 2:00 and 4:00 PM.
