Phyllis Bingham Edwards passed away Saturday, August 25, 2012 at Providence St. Mary Medical Center due to complications following intestinal surgery. She was born in Logan, Utah on May 1, 1942 to Elwood Ezra and Ethel Pauline Korth Bingham.
Phyllis was a retired schoolteacher, having taught at five of the seven Walla Walla public elementary schools. She was a magnificent cook, and her aptitude in the kitchen drew family and friends together on many occasions. She often used her own fresh-grown produce, but her talents in the garden extended far beyond vegetables. Her beautiful flowers amazed visitors, provided a haven for her much-loved kitties, and delighted hummingbirds from miles around.
Phyllis attended college on a music scholarship, enjoying singing roles in countless productions. She played the piano and instilled the love of music in the students she taught as well as the family she raised. Adored by her nine grandchildren, she made it her mission to be deeply involved in their lives.
Phyllis was a patron of the arts, frequently attending Walla Walla Symphony, concerts and theatre productions. After retirement, she was lucky enough to travel all around Europe and the South Pacific. She especially enjoyed the Hawaiian Islands, soaking up the sun each winter on the beaches of Kauai. She loved golfing with the Nine-Holers, early morning swims with the Splashettes, yoga and bicycling.
Phyllis is survived by her loving husband of 20 years, John R. Edwards; daughters Natalie (Jeff) Horner, Michelle Welch, and Kristi Borgia; stepsons Scott Edwards and Todd (Leigh) Edwards; grandchildren Meghan (Jamie) Bosanko, Meisha Horner, Nicholas Borgia, Rhonin Edwards, Paige Edwards, Rylie Edwards, Meileigh Welch, Samuale Welch, and Jude Edwards; brothers Dr. Korth (Addie) Bingham, Brent (Glenna) Bingham, and sister Beverly (Norvil) Elliott. She is preceded in death by her parents and sisters Ruth and Donna.
In lieu of a traditional funeral, a celebration of Phyllis’ life will be held on Saturday, September 1, 2012. The family is requesting that memorial contributions be made to the Walla Walla Music Boosters, c/o Roger Garcia, Music Coordinator
