Pauline Marcelle Stryker-Qualley

Pauline “Paula” Marcelle Stryker-Qualley passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday evening, July 22, 2014. She was born in Hampstead, London, England, on Sept. 17, 1922, to Jim and Violet Peevor. Paula attended Clarke College in London. Before getting married she worked at the British Air Ministry and volunteered during World War II at the USO, where she met and married her first husband. Paula was office manager at the Bon Marche, retiring in 1987. She was a member of The American Business Women’s Association, the Elks Lodge 287, and volunteered at Assumption Church.

Paula married her husband of 30 years, John “Jack” Stryker (deceased) on June 20 1945, and together they had five children. They lived in Westbury, N.Y., until moving to Renton, Wash., in 1967. The family moved to Walla Walla in 1972 and immediately felt at home. Paula loved living and working in Walla Walla.

She enjoyed many friends and acquaintances and was very proud to call Walla Walla her home. Most of all, Paula loved her large and extended family and was extremely proud of every one of them. She often said she had been blessed with a wonderful life. She also loved to travel and especially enjoyed her trips back to England to spend time with her brother and sister-in- law in the lovely small village of Lavenham in Suffolk.

While she loved her native country and English tradition, she was exceptionally proud of being a U.S. citizen and supported the building of the World War II memorial in Washington, D.C., as well as other organizations that helped our veterans. Paula was a deeply religious person who loved her God unconditionally. She was a positive person who rarely worried about what might happen but rather embraced the good in her life.

Paula was preceded in death by her husband, Jack in 1975; and her son, Raymond in 1991. She married Loris “Lars” Qualley on March 11, 1989, and they enjoyed 13 years together until his death on Dec. 29, 2001. She is survived by her three daughters and their spouses, Jackie and Ed Fiantaca of Union, Wash., Michelle and Scott Crumpacker of Vancouver, Denise and Cliff Larson of Walla Walla; and one son and his spouse, Paul and Sheryl Stryker of Spokane; and her brother, Ray and sister-in-law Barbara Peevor
of Lavenham, England. Paula is also survived by Carol Strandley of Everett, Wash., Reed and Linda Qualley of Vancouver, Wash., and Max and Diane McBurnett of Portland; as well as 13 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.

Viewing and visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 30, 2014, from 3 p.m. until after the Rosary at the Herring Groseclose Funeral Home. The Rosary will be recited on Wednesday, July 30, 2014, at 6 p.m., also at the funeral Home. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, July 31, 2014, at 10 a.m. at Assumption Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Walla Walla Community Hospice through the funeral home.
