Nelson Hsi-Chang Chia, age 81, born in Beijing, China, passed away on March 29, 2023, in Walla Walla.
Nelson's first and most important priority was his family and being a hard-working husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Donna; his daughters, Tammy and Maggie; his sons, Howard, Jeffery, and Christopher; his grandsons, Robert, Dean, and Bryant; and his granddaughter, Alicia.
After graduating with his bachelor's in architecture in China, Nelson joined the Republic of China Army in Taiwan. Following in his father's footsteps, he served 15 years, working his way up to Major and being the captain of the honor guard, a position held in the highest regard. After being honorably discharged, Nelson followed his passion of moving to America, where he met the driving force of his life, Donna.
Working hard to raise a family of five kids, Nelson and Donna moved from Southern California to Walla Walla, finally finding their forever home. Here, Nelson spent decades working with his nose to the grindstone to ensure his family was happy, taken care of, and given every opportunity they could possibly want. He faithfully supported his family with blood, sweat, tears, and many nights of overtime.
A man of extreme charisma, Nelson could make friends anywhere he went! With such a historical-filled past, he always had an interesting story to tell. Nelson filled many happy conversations with his military stories and his stories of China. He was hardheaded and stubborn but used those qualities to stand strong about the things he was most passionate about. He always found a reason to smile or dance in the rain.
His passion for family and the LA Lakers was the reason behind many family road trips. Most of the memories his children have were of him behind the wheel. Truly selfless, taking time to hit every amusement park, beach, and McDonald's along the way. Nelson's passing has left us at a loss; he will be ever so missed by his family. He will forever be in our memories as caring, supportive, hard-working, compassionate, and, most of all, instilling those he left behind with the passion and drive to continue his legacy.
