Nancy T. Mitchell

June 11, 1929 — January 3, 2015

Nancy T Mitchell 85, died very peacefully January 3, 2015 after a very long battle with Alzheimer’s.

Nancy was born in Seattle Washington to Cyril and Marion Shaw in 1929. She had one sister, Jean. She attended schools in Seattle and later came to Whitman College where she met and married Jim Mitchell. They spent a brief period of time in Washington D.C. where Jim was in the service. Soon after, they moved back to Walla Walla. They had 2 daughters. They spent most of their married life in Walla Walla but moved to Long Beach, Washington for several years after Jim's retirement. They then came back to Walla Walla after Jim became ill and Nancy began her long battle with Alzheimer’s.

During her growing up years, Nancy and her family had great times and adventures in and around Puget Sound. At this time, Nancy grew her love of horses, both drawing them and riding them. She traveled by bus and spent many hours at a local riding stable. She later went on to teach riding lessons and became a horse show judge. She and Jim and their daughter, Sarah, once traveled to Canada to see an International Show jumping competition. Nancy passed her love of horses to both her daughters and traveled with them to many horse shows over the years.

Nancy loved the outdoors! Horseback riding, gardening, the beach, and animals. My sisters' family and mine enjoyed great vacations at mom and dad's beach house.

Nancy is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law: Katie Hellberg (Dan), Sarah Nelson (Mike); grandchildren: Matt, Amber, Erin, Rachel and Ryan; great grandchildren: Wade, Kate, Alana and newest arrival Jase. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Jean; her husband, Jim Mitchell and grandson, Rick.

1 Thess. 5:8 But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for a helmet, the hope of salvation.

There will be a family memorial gathering at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family would request that any memorial donations be made to the Blue Mountain Humane Society, The Christian Aid Center or the St Mary Regional Cancer Center Special Needs Fund through the Herring Groseclose Funeral Home, 315 W. Alder, Walla Walla, WA.
