Monica Ann Lyons (1931-2015) was the twelfth child of Joseph W. and Mary Denzel Lyons. She attended Walla Walla’s St. Patrick’s grade and high schools. Upon graduating in 1949, Monica entered the Providence Order of Sisters. She attended and obtained her college degree from the College of Great Falls in Great Falls, Mont.
For 26 years, she was a school teacher and taught school in Washington, Montana and California. Monica subsequently pursued a career change and obtained an RN degree in international nursing from Seattle Pacific University. After receiving her RN, Monica worked in Walla Walla at St. Mary’s Hospital and at the Odd Fellows Home for over 16 years, until she retired as the night nurse supervisor.
Monica was fond of and enjoyed spending time with her many nieces and nephews. During her last years she worked diligently as a mentor and tutor to grandnephew Lucas Lyons, to whom she was particularly devoted. A lifelong Catholic, Monica was a member of Assumption Parish, where she attended daily Mass.
Monica is survived by three siblings; preceded in death by eight siblings.
The Rosary will be held Friday, July 10, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. at Assumption Church, and the funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Friday, July 10, 2015, at Assumption Church. Luncheon will follow after the graveside burial. Memorial contributions may be made to the Walla Walla Catholic Schools through the Herring Groseclose Funeral Home, 315 W. Alder, Walla Walla, WA.
