Maybelle Marie Culbertson

July 16, 1942 — July 25, 2015

Maybelle was born to Alonzo (Lon) Manning and Hazel Atkinson Manning in Dayton, Washington on July 16, 1942. She was the oldest of 5 siblings. She was raised on the North Touchet, on property that her family homesteaded over a hundred years ago. She enjoyed having a wealth of pets over the years, many of which she took in from others that could no longer keep them. Maybelle married Joe Culbertson and they raised 5 children. She was an LPN and worked at many local hospitals, nursing homes and daycare centers over the years. After Joe passed away in 1985, she continued to live in the mountains in the log home that they built in 1978. She also went back to school to earn her Horticulture degree at Walla Walla Community College.

Maybelle was active leading 4-H clubs, both cooking/sewing and horse, and she also coached her daughter’s softball team. Along with her good friend, Elizabeth Thorn, she helped start a museum that renovated old buildings from Dayton’s past including the log home that she was raised in. She was always ”Mother Maybelle” to many of her children’s friends and was also mom to others who needed a place to live. Maybelle enjoyed riding horses, sewing, weaving, reading, gardening, traveling with her children and grandchildren, watching her grandkids play sports, and visiting and playing cards with good friends. She loved her country life, her dog Otis and cat Jenny. Her grandkids are going to miss visiting grandma in her “forest”!

She is survived by her siblings: Alonzo (Lonnie) Manning, Gladys Snider, Patrick Manning and Karen Paolino (Peter), all of Dayton. Children: Dee Ann Tucker (Johan Filla) of Dayton, Alonzo Ford Culbertson of Dayton, Naomi Thomas of Dayton, Joeleen Orchard (Henderson) of Walla Walla, Colette Daniels (Jeff) of Kennewick, Clorissa Orchard (Kelton) of Pasco. Grandchildren: Jessica Jewett (Richard Baldwin) of Richland, Robert Hyer of Portland, Alyse Moss (Hatti) of Milton Freewater, Jordin Gatlin (Ty) of Dayton, Seth Thomas of Dayton, Alex and Dawson Daniels of Kennewick, Paris and Natalie Orchard of Walla Walla, Gabrielle and Blaine Orchard of Pasco, Great Grandchildren: Banyon Moss, Madison and Austin Jewett and Ryker Baldwin; Damien, Kevin, and Shane Hyer; Thalia Gatlin Nephews: Justin Dunleavy (Dani) Jasper and Jett of Dayton; Jared Dunleavy (Amanda) Jarrett and Brock of Hermiston; Lennie Snider (Cindy) of Dayton; Chez Snider and Lonnie Snider both of Dayton, her Best Friends Nancy Breithaupt and Bobby Jo Klingenstein, and her always faithful dog Otis!
