Maxine Spencer Green

Maxine “Peggy” Spencer Green passed away at the age of 95 on Sunday morning, June 19 in Bellingham Washington. Maxine, a former resident of Walla Walla was born in Grangeville, Idaho on May 7, 1921. Maxine grew up on a farm near Prescott WA together with her 5 brothers and sisters. She studied psychology and education at WSU where she met her husband Dale and graduated Phi Beta Kappa. They were married on June 30, 1946. She taught school in Battle Ground during WWII and at Roosevelt High School in Seattle while Dale attended the University of Washington Law School. After graduation, they moved to Spokane and started a family. In 1960, they moved to Walla Walla where they lived for 10 years. Maxine was an active member of the Pioneer Methodist church and was active in the community, serving as Precinct Committeewoman and teaching Sunday school. She also became the first female chair of Washington Camps Furthest Out. They moved to Spokane in 1970 when Dale was appointed to the Washington State Court of Appeals. They were active members of the Manito United Methodist Church where Maxine chaired the Vietnamese Resettlement Program for many years and led Bible study classes in her home for high school students. In her later years, she enjoyed being a grandmother. After Dale's death in 2007, Peggy moved to an independent living facility in Seattle. Her fellow residents quickly saw her intelligence and recognized her leadership abilities and asked her to become president of their Residents Council. She served in that capacity for two years. She will be remembered for her kindness, generosity of spirit, and gracious leadership style. Maxine is survived by her two children, Fred and Judith, her grandchildren Madeleine and Camille, her great grandson Jibriel and numerous nieces and nephews. Her body will be laid to rest at the Blue Mountain Cemetery in Walla Walla on June 30 at 10:00 a.m. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 at the Herring Groseclose funeral home. A visitation will be held the evening before on June 29.
