It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Marie York on Saturday, December 20, 2025, at Providence St. Mary Medical Center in Walla Walla, WA. Mary lived her life fearlessly and touched many lives with her compassion, faith, and deep loyalty to her friends and family.
Mary was born in Walla Walla on March 10, 1956. She grew up in Prescott, WA, with her two brothers, Darrel and Steve, and she often spoke fondly of her childhood on the farm and riding her horses. She graduated from Fort Wright College with a bachelor’s in education and spent over 40 years teaching, the majority of it at the Milton Freewater Head Start program.
Mary was a devout Catholic and an active member of the Assumption Church parish. Her faith was deeply held and an important part of her life. She gave tirelessly to others, never hesitating to volunteer or help when needed.
Mary raised three kids as a single mother. She made sure her children’s lives were filled with love and every opportunity she could give them. Despite the large demand on her time from scout meetings, sports games, and everything else, she never once complained and was always present when her kids needed her.
Her love for her children was only rivaled by her love for her five granddaughters. Mary loved being a grandmother (affectionately called “MoMo” by all). For her, retiring from teaching meant she could spend even more time teaching, reading to, and taking them to the park. She welcomed her newest granddaughter, Charlotte, in October of this year.
Mary was preceded in death by her son, Christopher York. Losing her son was the greatest sorrow she had to endure in her life. While her family and loved ones now mourn her, they take comfort knowing she can now rest in peace as they are reunited.
Mary is survived by her two children, Brian York and Theresa Salemme; her two brothers, Steve and Darrel Kerckhof; and her five granddaughters, Brynn, Ellie, and Charlotte Salemme, and Natalie and Chloe York. Mary was taken far too soon and too suddenly, and she will be deeply missed. Her joy and enthusiasm were a constant presence in all our lives. The pain and sadness of its absence are at least somewhat tempered by the memories and love she gave us.
A rosary will be held for Mary on Monday, December 29, 2025, at 6:00 PM at the Chapel of the Herring Funeral Home. A memorial mass will be held on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, at 10:00 AM at Assumption Catholic Church in Walla Walla. Following the service, she will be laid to rest at Mountain View Cemetery in Walla Walla next to her son, Christopher. A reception will follow at Assumption Parish Hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Walla Walla Catholic Schools through the Herring Groseclose Funeral Home, 315 W Alder St, Walla Walla, WA 99362. Friends and family are invited to sign the online guestbook at www.herringgroseclose.com.
