Mary Gertrude “Gertie” Rogers was born May 22, 1927, in New Haven, Conn., to Thomas and Mary Ellen
Gallagher. She married Frank Rogers on May 25, 1946, in Connecticut. Frank and Mary moved to Walla Walla, where they raised four children in their home on Alder Street.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Frank. After Frank’s death, and at the age of 51, Mary entered the work force, which is when she started going by Mary. You could tell how long she was acquainted with someone by how she was greeted, Gertie or Mary.
She took her first job with Catholic Children and Family Services. A few years later Mary started her job as the secretary/office manager at Assumption Parrish and the Diocese of Spokane. Twenty-eight years later she retired. During Mary’s tenure there, she worked
with seven different priests. Mary loved the fellowship and the people she met and worked with, resulting in many lasting friendships. Mary was a deeply religious woman and the church and her faith were such a big
part of life. She loved her kids, grandkids and greatgrandkids.
Mary is survived by her four children, Larry Rogers
(Anita Swan), Mary Sutliff (John), Kathy Rogers and
Alice Gladden (Dwight); four grandchildren, Carrie
Rogers (Kerry Fann), Martie Thomas (Vince), Sarah
Jantz (Dustin). She is also survived by two sisters,
Rita Gaul and Joan Shattuck; and four great-grandchildren.
Mary was preceded in death by her grandson, Erik Walery, who was so dear to her; five brothers; and three sisters.
