Mary W. Eastman passed away March 2, 2016.
Mary (Maria Wilhelmina Van Griethuysen) was born in Apeldoorn, Holland, in 1932 to Gerrit and Maria Van Griethuysen. She was
the third of three children and shared many stories of growing up in Holland during World War II.
Mary met her first husband, Petier Ongers, and they had three sons while living in Holland. In 1957, through a sponsorship by the Purist Baptist Church of Roseburg, Ore., they immigrated to the United
States in search of a better life, with their final destination
being Walla Walla. They traveled across the Atlantic Ocean via ship during very rough seas and all of them were seasick the entire 10-day trip.
A year later their fourth son was born. Petier and Mary later divorced and Mary was a single mother raising four children.
In 1965, Mary married Bryon Eastman, whom she enjoyed nearly 51 years of marriage together. Byron and Mary had two sons together. In 1967, the family moved to Blue Creek Road and then in 1985 to the
homestead they own today.
In her younger years, Mary was an avid bowler and earned many trophies. She and Byron raised Arabian horses, and her favorite time of the year was spring when the foals were born and the tulips were blooming.
Mary spent many years attending Bible Study Fellowship and developed a deep love for the Lord.
Mary was a passionate Seattle Mariners fan and never missed watching a game on TV whether they were winning or losing. Her greatest love was her family and she devoted her entire life caring for husband,
sons, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her house is filled with pictures of family and she would brag about her boys and grandchildren to all she encountered.
She always had her special homemade cookies on hand and they will be greatly missed.
She is proceeded in death by her parents; and two sisters, Annie and Nellie. Her son, Ed, passed away from cancer two days following her death. She is survived by her husband, Byron; sons, Gary (Vickie)
Ongers, Tony (Debbie) Ongers, John (Cindy) Ongers, Rocky (Stephanie) Eastman, Marty (Jennifer) Eastman; daughter-in-law, Denise Ongers; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
