Marilyn J. Drayton passed away peacefully at home in the early morning hours of May 11, 2015, the Monday after Mother’s Day, just as her mother did 26 years before her; we were blessed with two very devout mothers who didn’t want to miss a Mother’s Day with their family.
Marilyn was born in Walla Walla, September 10, 1929, to Ervin and Eulalia Duncan Foltz.
She attended Paine School and graduated with the class of 1947 Walla Walla High School. She began her career with the US Army Corps of Engineers in 1951 that would take her all the way to her retirement in 1984. She worked most of her tenure as a budget analyst, keeping record of numerous projects for the Corps. She took particular honor in being invited to be a part of the dedication of the Dworshak Dam. She married Donald D. Drayton, Jr. and they had one child. They later divorced.
Marilyn was an avid and skilled bowler, traveling around the Pacific Northwest to tournaments, winning too many prizes and trophies to count. Marilyn also took great pride in keeping impeccable financial records and her family greatly appreciated her fiscal expertise, as she supervised all of their finances and taxes. She knew right where to find any needed documents, past or present, or accounting histories. She was sharp-minded until the very end and continued to enjoy crossword and Sudoku puzzles and reading until her eyesight weakened.
She was always eager to travel around the west coast, to pick up mechanical parts with friends, gamble with her girlfriends, or to take her daughter to various rodeo and baton competitions.
In her retirement, she stayed busy with volunteer work as the treasurer overseeing the books for the CEREO (Corps of Engineers retired employees group). She also played a huge part in the lives of her grandchildren, attending every sporting event and school pageant, and never missing a chance to encourage them to get their education and to find a job with the kinds of benefits and retirement that had enabled her to give her family so much.
A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Jon Gardner and staff, as well as Susan and Nancy and the entire staff of Walla Walla Community Hospice, and Mary, her daytime caregiver, for their compassionate care for Mom.
Marilyn was preceded in death by her grandparents Clem and Chelcie Duncan, Uncle Emeral Duncan, and her parents. She is survived by daughter, Lori Drayton Brown, grandson, Justin Brown (Jenna Maley), and granddaughter, Chelsea Brown, and dear friends Clinton and Sonia French.
Viewing & visitation will be held on Friday, May 15, 2015 from 11:00 AM until 7:00 PM at the Herring Groseclose Funeral Home, 315 W. Alder, Walla Walla, WA. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2015 at 10:00 AM also at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery. As Marilyn always said to all of us: “I love you dearly, and don’t you ever forget that.”
