Margaret Anna Hallowell

November 7, 1927 — August 12, 2017

Walla Walla

Margaret Hallowell went to be with her Lord on Saturday morning, August 12, 2017.

Born Margaret Anna Willis on November 7, 1927, in Toronto, Ontario, to John and Mary (Fleck) Willis, Margaret lived a full and fascinating life. Several members of her family were missionaries, and one of her earliest memories was traveling to China for her grandfather’s funeral there. Margaret herself was sixteen years old before she came to the saving knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ, but her desire to live for Him was obvious to everyone who knew her for the rest of her life.

During World War II, when most of the young men were in the military, she served as a “farmerette” raising crops on an Ontario farm; that experience may have kindled another life-long love: gardening. She earned a degree in psychology at the University of Toronto, then went into nurses’ training at Toronto General Hospital.

She met Malcolm “Mac” Hallowell at Emmaus Bible School, where both were training for the mission field; they were married on May 28, 1954, and began a life of faith and adventure together with a trip up the then-still-unpaved Alaska Highway to Fairbanks. Their journey zig-zagged across North America as they served the Lord and raised a growing family. Daniel was their first child, born in Illinois. John was born in Oregon; Ruth, Stephen and Mary in New Brunswick, Canada; Andrew in Massachusetts, and Keren in New Jersey (where Mac settled into a successful career as a machinist). They retired to Walla Walla (where they had lived for a few months almost 40 years earlier) in 1993. Margaret never gave up on her “missionary” dream, and was known far and wide for her story-telling, her writings, her laminated texts and calendars and assorted other efforts to let others know about God’s love.
Margaret is survived by her husband, Mac; by all seven of her children, and by 31 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren, most of whom live in or around Walla Walla.
