Maralyn Delphine Carey, sister in Christ, devoted wife and cherished mother, grandmother and friend to many, joined our Heavenly Father on Nov. 23, 2015. She passed away at her home on the farm in Walla Walla surrounded by family.
Maralyn was born in Walla Walla on May 17, 1935, to Robert and Delphine Golden. She graduated from Walla Walla High School and attended Washington State College. Maralyn later graduated from Walla Walla Community College with a degree in nursing. She worked as a registered nurse for 19 years at the Walla Walla Clinic and was a member of the Washington State Nursing Association.
Maralyn shared an intense relationship and love for God. She was deeply rooted in her faith, family, tradition and service to others. She enjoyed music and played violin with the Walla Walla Symphony under three conductors. Maralyn was committed to studying God’s Word and participated in Bible Study Fellowship for over 30 years. She was an active member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. As a young mother, Maralyn was a Girl Scout leader, participated in Walla Walla Junior League and the League of Women Voters.
With a desire to serve others and share Christ’s love, she served at the Christian Aid Center and on the board of directors for the Emergency Medical Service and Trauma Care Council. Maralyn and her husband David were involved in Marriage Encounter and mentored engaged couples for marriage preparation through their church for many years.
Maralyn loved learning, believed in a good education, had a passion for politics and had a strong work ethic. She loved living on the farm with an enthusiasm for raising cows. She held a membership in the Washington Cattlemen’s Association. Maralyn enjoyed traveling, exploring new lands, cultures and people. Cabo San Lucas was an annual winter favorite. She treasured her time exploring the Promised Land with other members of the church community.
Maralyn married David Carey on Dec. 24, 1954. They shared an inseparable bond and enjoyed 62 years together. A daughter, Jackie Carey Bernhart, preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband, David; and two daughters, Julie Carey Del Moro and Nancy Carey Danforth. Maralyn loved her eight grandchildren, David and Matthew Del Moro, 1st Lt. Christopher Danforth, Amanda Danforth, Ashley Danforth Richardson, Michele Bernhart Young, McKenzie and Sam Bernhart; one great-granddaughter, Paityn Young.
A Rosary service will be held on Thursday, Dec. 3, 2015, at Herring Groseclose Funeral Home starting at 6 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held on Friday, Dec. 4, 2015, 10 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Memorial donations may be made to the Christian Aid Center through the funeral home.
