Lucille "Lucy" A Roeder

June 18, 1935 — November 8, 2018

Walla Walla

Lucy was born June 18, 1935, at home in Hoven, South Dakota to Leo and Barbara Gerber Illies and passed away Nov. 8, 2018, at the age of 83, just 12 days after her husband of 61 years, Orville.

She was one of 13 children. Lucy met Orville Roeder when he was home on leave from the Army in 1954. They were married in August 1957 in Wahpeton, North Dakota. They began their family with Rick and Lori Jo in North Dakota. They moved to Walla Walla in 1960 and added Perry, Mitchell, and Tammy to the family.

Lucy stayed home to raise the children and ran a small day care until her children were in school. She went to beauty school and became a hairdresser. She worked at Inez’s, later to become the Hair Affair, and Ramona’s Kut ‘n Kurl until her retirement. She helped and supported her children in many functions such as traveling with and chaperoning the WW ROTC, youth bowling and hollering from the stands at many sporting events they participated in.

Lucy belonged to the WW Jaycee Jaynes and was named Jayee Jane of the year in 1967. She was a local life member and board member of the WW Bowling Association; a 55 year member of Epsilon Sigma Alpha in which she held all offices in the local chapter, Alpha Beta and was State President in 1992-93 and currently the educational chair for the state; and a longtime member of Assumption Catholic Church.

She enjoyed cooking for the local Multiple Sclerosis support group and the Eastgate Lions Club. She enjoyed watching the Seattle Seahawks and the Seattle Mariners on TV. Lucy and Orville went to every home game for the Walla Walla Sweets Baseball (weather and health permitting) since they started. She went to as many sports events for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren as possible.

Lucy is survived by her five children, Rick (Vickie), Lori Jo, Perry, Mitchell (Trudy), and Tammy (Ellen); grandchildren, Tim, Ambrea, Nicholas, Ashley (Jared), Jimmy, Andrea, Dakota, Michael and Adam; great-grandchildren, Amiria, Braiden, Quintin, Taylor, Xander and Grayson; sisters, Caroline Haase, Charlott Grece, and Irene Raymond; many cousins, nieces and nephews.

She is preceded by her husband, Orville on Oct. 27, 2018; her parents, five sisters, four brothers and a great-grandson, Marcus.

A memorial service will be held on Nov. 30, 2018, at 10 a.m, at Assumption Catholic Church on Alder St. in Walla Walla with Father Nick officiating. A remembrance reception will follow in the fellowship hall at the church. Herring-Groseclose Funeral Home, 315 W. Alder, Walla Walla is in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the local Multiple Sclerosis support group through the funeral home or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in care of the funeral home or on line at www.stjude.org.
