Lawrence "Larry" LeRoy Summers

Larry Summers was born to Howard and Hazel Summers in Walla Walla on May 7, 1932, where he spent his school years graduating from Wa-Hi in 1950. Larry immediately enlisted in the navy where he spent the next 8 years. Later he transferred to the army where he completed his enlistment of 21 years. Stationed at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas, he served at the White Sands Missile Range.

After his discharge Larry went to work for Century 21 Real Estate. He became a trainer, traveling in the southern states and Arizona and California. Never one to be bored and always up for a challenge, Larry set up a public demonstration on how bananas are ripened. Next he put together a Borderline Trade Show which showcased various businesses (Maquiladoras) that were located along the border of Texas and Mexico. Both of which were very successful.

More adventures lay ahead for Larry when he moved to Walla Walla in 1990. He married Joan Berry and soon after their marriage, he and Joan become very active in the College Place Presbyterian Church. He brought many talents with him, chiefly those of organizing and teaching. He thought that men needed a place to fellowship together, so he started a monthly men’s breakfast. An outreach into the community took him to the Christian Aid Center where he put his energy to work in a variety of different ways, mostly by teaching men’s Bible studies, which he did for 20 years.

Larry, along with some of his acquaintances, saw the needs of people who had to move but lacked the resources to do so. So, they jumped in to make that happen. The Walk to Emmaus Community was also an important part of Larry’s life. Through this connection Larry was introduced to the Prison Ministry, a three-day outreach to the inmates at the prison. As their support person he was the liaison between the Ministry and the church and made sure that their accommodations were met – sleep, showers, and a hot breakfast over the weekend.

Larry lived a full, interesting 94 years. He is survived by his wife Joan Summers, son Mark Summers of Walla Walla, son Michael Summers of Melbourne, Australia; nine grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and several nieces. He was predeceased by his wives Sally, Martha, Carol, parents Howard and Hazel, sister Dora, daughter Lana, son Kyle and grandson Jason.

A Celebration of Larry’s life will take place at College Place Presbyterian Church on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at 11:00 am.
