Lawana R. Porter, 76, passed away on August 9, 2023. Lawana was born on May 17, 1947, in Walla Walla to Bill and Letha Wilson. She attended school in Walla Walla and Klamath Falls before marrying her soulmate, George Porter, on August 16, 1963. Lawana and George were married 52 years before his passing in 2015. In their early days of marriage, she was a stay-at-home Mom raising their beautiful family until George's industrial accident on December 2, 1974. At that time, Lawana jumped into the workforce and took any job she could to support her family. Later, she got her GED and Office Certificate from Walla Walla Community College to better herself and further support her family. Despite this change, Lawana never missed a beat and was a devoted mother and partner. Lawana's best-known position was working as the office manager at Hearing Aid Source for several years before her stroke in 2012, which forced her to retire.
Lawana was a loving wife, mother, neighborhood mom, grandma, great-grandma, aunt, sister, and friend. Lawana loved her family and friends with every fiber of her being. She always put others before herself. She loved Christmas and would start her shopping in January to cover all she loved. Lawana was happiest planning family gatherings and potlucks to bring her family together. She had a way of always making you feel loved, protected, and special; always quick to help or offer advice. Lawana enjoyed winning at bingo, 10,000, pinochle, rummy, and Michigan rummy, shopping, cooking, baking, reading, music, movies, jigsaw puzzles, and completing crossword puzzles in pen.
She always said her greatest joy in life was spoiling her grandkids. Fun isn't enough of an adjective to describe 'Grandma Lawana' and her magical purse that held more than Mary Poppin's bag. She rarely missed a single sports game or school activity and always made time for her grandbabies.
Lawana is survived by her children: Debbie, Tom (Kerri), Todd (Tammy), Jeff (Melinda), and Jennifer; her bonus children: Krista and Patrick; her grandchildren: Zack, Kaitlin (Jeff), Zach, Kylan, Kody (Anna), Sam, Kasey, Dan (Kylee), Bethany (Tony), Nolan, and Javi; great-grandchildren: McKayla, Hailey, Ryan, Tommy, Madisynn, Mylie, Keelie, Tierynn, Sorynn, and Andy. She was preceded in death by her husband George, sister Nancy, brothers Bob and Steve, son-in-law Andy, grandson Koty, and great-grandson Logan.
A true friend, honest, strong, and just extraordinary. She will be greatly missed.
No funeral will be held at Lawana's request. A private celebration of life will be held at a later date.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Herring Groseclose Funeral Home. Friends and family are invited to sign the online guestbook at www.herringgroseclose.com.
