LD was born to Leslie Melvin McCubbins and Elsie Elizabeth Eisler Mc- Cubbins on December 6, 1928. The oldest of two sons, he grew up in Touchet, where he raised milk cows and farmed with his brother, Glen McCubbins, until his retirement in 1988.
On October 4, 1949, he married Patricia Fontaine Willis/Bean and had six children. They later divorced in 1964. On December 20, 1965, he married Goldie Marie Brooks. With the marriage, he added six additional children to his family.
LD was a member of The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation; a 50+ year member of the Touchet Grange #251; a charter member of, as well as having been influential in establishing the Blue Mountain Coin Club; a member of the Nomad Campers Club, National Rifle Association; a 30+ year membership of the Fire Department, which qualified him as a veteran of civil service. He also held the position of a deacon and treasurer for the Two-Rivers Chapel in Touchet, where he was an active member for several years.
One of his greatest achievements was having read the entire Holy Bible over 70 times. A man of commitment and great Christian faith, he was diligent in his ongoing service to his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
LD is survived by his wife, Goldie McCubbins of College Place at Regency; five children: Darlene (Marty) Schmid of Hermiston, Eileen (Jim) Daniel of Walla Walla, Malinda (Shawn) Prendiville of Walla Walla, Michael (Julie) McCubbins of Touchet; five step-children: Connie (the late David) Dirks of LaGrande, Marsha (Rex) Meyer of Milton-Freewater, Sybil (Jim) Johnson of Clarkston, Wash., Ellen (Doug) Bender of Umapine. He and his wife, raised a grandson, Danny Young. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Evelyn Patterson and her husband Don Patterson; a son, Robert McCubbins; a step-son, George Brooks; a step-daughter, Carol Jackson; two granddaughters, Amy Christine Patterson, and Tracie Lynn Patterson.
Donations may be made to the Two-River Chapel through the Herring Groseclose Funeral Home, 315 W. Alder, Walla Walla. Viewing and visitation will be from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 16, 2017, at the Herring Groseclose Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held on Friday, March 17, 2017, at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Herring Funeral home in Walla Walla with Pastor Joe Rhymes officiating.
