Julia Guerrero Delgado

Julia Guerrero Delgado, 96, of Touchet, WA, passed away peacefully on January 23, 2023, with her children and her family by her side.

Julia was born on June 19, 1926, in Eagle Pass, TX, to Simona Castillo and Antonio Guerrero. She married Otilo Andres Delgado on November 15, 1953, in Eagle Pass, TX, and then moved to Touchet, WA, in 1954, where they raised four children: Teresa, Orlando, Sylvia, and Rosa. Otilo and Julia were married for 55 years.

Julia truly enjoyed Mexican dancing, and our early memories are of her dancing with our father and us kids, especially at special events like weddings and quinceaneras. Julia loved to take care of her yard and flower gardens. Julia enjoyed raising chihuahuas; we had quite a few of them throughout the years. Watching animal wildlife documentaries was another passion of hers, especially in her later years.

Our mother was known for opening her door and her heart to those community members in need, especially Mexican newcomers. She was often sought out by the Touchet School District and the community to help interpret and translate. She provided transportation for her neighbors for errands and appointments. On several occasions, she provided transportation to birthing mothers who needed immediate transportation to the hospital and possibly saved their lives. In one instance, a young woman stopped us at the Walla Walla Fair; mom was in her wheelchair and asked if mom was Julia Delgado. She told us about how their mother was giving birth at home by herself, and mom was called to help. Julia drove her and her mom to the hospital where her twin sister was delivered in the hospital ER.

Julia enjoyed being involved in her friends' and family events and loved to host them at her home with BBQs or Mexican soup (posole). She volunteered at the Catholic Church, the Union Pacific Railroad Club, and the Touchet Grange food giveaways. Mom made sure we knew Jesus Christ as our Savior and taught us right from wrong. Julia always made the sign of the cross until she no longer could. Her prayers for our family will truly be missed.

She is survived by three daughters, Teresa, Sylvia, and Rosa, and one son, Orlando. Teresa and James Weaver of Touchet, WA. Sylvia Cortinas (late husband John Cortinas) of Auburn, WA. Rosa and Fred Cruz of Pasco, WA.  Orlando Delgado and Ovila Poffenberger of Walla Walla, WA. 12 Grandchildren, and 24 Great-Grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, one grandchild, three brothers, one sister, and parents.

A Rosary will be recited on Friday, February 3, 2023, at 6:00 PM, at the Chapel of the Herring Funeral Home, 315 W. Alder St., Walla Walla, with Sally Buchanan officiating. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, February 4, 2023, at 11:00 AM, at the Chapel of the Herring Funeral Home, with Deacon Jim Barrow and Pastor Tim Bruner co-officiating. A private burial will take place later at Touchet Cemetery.
