Joyce Marie Dicus

Joyce (Hastings) Dicus passed away at her home in Park Plaza on Feb. 14,2016. Joyce was born in Lewiston, she arrived in Walla Walla when she was about a week old. She was raised and attended schools in Walla
Walla. She graduated from Walla Walla High School in 1946. Following a stint as a telephone operator,she married Charles R. Dicus on Jan. 17, 1947. With the exception of a short time spent living in Alaska,
Joyce and Charles spent the remainder of their lives living in the Pacific Northwest. Joyce was a homemaker and active participant in operating the various types of farms she and Charles owned. Her participation included managing the finances.
Wherever she lived Joyce was active in a local church. She enjoyed teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, singing in the choir and playing the piano and organ. She was a member of the Waitsburg Presbyterian Church at the time of her death.
Joyce also enjoyed gardening, sewing, quilting, and reading. She made many Raggedy Ann and Andy doll sets, Winnie the Pooh stuffed animals, and cloth books and dolls used for teaching special needs individuals
how to do tasks such as manipulating buttons, snaps, zippers, and shoelaces.
In 2010 Joyce moved to Park Plaza. While she lived there she continued to sing in the choir, and played the piano as long as her arthritis permitted. She was a member of the Red Hat Lady’s Society, helped manage the Park Plaza Library, and enjoyed going on the
trips organized for the residents.
Joyce was well liked by her friends and neighbors. All who knew her commented on her positive outlook on life, sense of humor, smiling face, and ability to face adversity, with grace, dignity, and laughter.
Joyce is survived by her daughters, Lynn Stephens of Cheney, Wash., Cheryl (Dale) Isakson of Wasilla, Alaska, and Karen (Todd) Johnston of Burien, Wash.; five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren;
one brother, Gene Hastings of Walla Walla. In 2014 Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Charles. She was also preceded in death by her their son, Lee Dicus; her parents, Charles and Ruth Hastings; her
brothers, Charles, Robert, Theodore, and Stanley Hastings; and her sister, Lois Hastings.
A memorial service will be held for Joyce and Charles when their remains are interred at the Washington State Veteran’s Cemetery in Medical Lake, Wash.
Memorial contributions may be made to either the Charles R. and Joyce M. Dicus Endowed Scholarship or the Waitsburg Presbyterian Church through Herring Groseclose Funeral Home, 315 W. Alder, Walla
Walla, WA 99362.
