Josephine Zaro, 100, passed away August 8, 2012 at her home in Walla Walla, Washington.
Josephine was born in Walla Walla on January 26, 1912 to Ambrose & Angela Berteolli Pinza. She married Tony Zaro on September 23, 1936.
She was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church and St. Anne’s Altar Society. She worked at Birds Eye Cannery and helped her husband on the family truck farm raising Walla Walla Sweet Onions and other vegetables while also making a wonderful home for her husband and daughter. For many years, they sold Walla Walla Sweet Onions on Highway 12 and passed that passion onto their grandson.
She had a wonderful flower garden along with helping her husband plant a victory garden with many type of vegetables for their use. She was a talented seamstress sewing her daughter’s school clothes and in later years, volunteered at St. Vincent de Paul helping make quilts. She enjoyed watching her great granddaughter, Kaylee, play softball and ride her horses.
She is survived by her daughter, Phyllis Brown (Jake), grandson Jacob (Jim) Brown (Angie); and great granddaughter, Kaylee Brown; a sister, Carolyn Goodwin and numerous nieces & nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Tony; brother, Frank Pinza; and sisters, Mary Locati & Johanna (Jennie) Locati.
Viewing & visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 14, 2012 from 2 PM until after the Rosary at the Herring Groseclose Funeral Home, 315 W. Alder, Walla Walla, WA. The Rosary will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, August 14, 2012 at 6:30 PM with Sister Helen Mason officiating. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, August 15, 2012 at 10:00 AM at St. Francis Catholic Church with Father Jeff Core, Celebrant. Interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Francis Catholic Church of Walla Walla Catholic Schools through the funeral home.
