Early in the morning of October 17 of 2023, John Alexander, after a short illness, peacefully completed his earthly journey, and began his forever life alongside his Lord and Savior in Heaven and rejoining his wife, Geri, who preceded him to Heaven by a year and a half.
John was born on June 26, 1929, in Mt. Vernon in Washington state and was raised there by loving parents, John Wesley and Ruth Alexander, with his older sister, Joan, and his younger brother, Gary. After graduating high school, John attended Montana Tech in Butte, Montana where he also met his future wife, Geri. After a very short romance the two of them were married on November 11, 1950, and nothing could separate them except for the Lord's calling Geri home after 72 years of marriage.
John was a loving father to both of his daughters, Sheila Shapiro (m. Geoff) and Karen Colberg (m. Brad). He is also survived by his grandchildren, Jason Shapiro (m. Ria), Anne Brown (m. David), Steven Shapiro (m. Allie), Ryan Colberg, Derek Colberg (m. Sara), and Patrick Colberg. John was able to also enjoy his great-grandchildren, Nikolaus Shapiro, Judah Shapiro, Isaac Brown, Ezra Shapiro, Logan Brown, and Ivy Shapiro.
After Montana Tech, John went on to a career in chemical engineering that was cut short when he decided that his real calling was to become an attorney. Attending the University of Montana, he earned his law degree and afterwards moved his family to Butte where he established a successful law practice until his retirement in 1994. His time in Butte was notable for his election as president of the Butte-Silver Bow Bar Association (1980), for his bid for election to the legislature, and as city attorney.
John enjoyed outdoor sports, including golf, skiing, and tennis. Notable was the hole in one he scored on the 14th hole of the Butte Country Club golf course.
Foremost among all of John's rich and varied achievements was that he was a man of great character. He thought the best of everyone he met. He was very charitable, giving to many worthy causes. John was a devoted reader of the Bible, doing so every evening before bed until it was too difficult to do so. He loved attending his church, Walla Walla Presbyterian Church.
We are poorer on Earth for John's passing, but Heaven is richer as a result.
He will be greatly missed by his family. A graveside service was held at Mountain View Cemetery on Friday, October 27, at 2pm.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Christian Aid Center or Walla Walla Presbyterian Church thru Herring Groseclose Funeral Home, 315 W Alder St, Walla Walla WA 99362.
