Joan Louise Child passed away peacefully on July 10, 2023, at age 93, in Milton-Freewater, OR, after a long illness with Alzheimer’s.
Joan “Joanie” Child was born in Oregon City, OR, to Walter and Norma Hamilton Bradley on July 6, 1930. She and her sister, Deloris, were raised by their father and stepmother, Mary Bradley, from a young age.
Joanie met and married Charles “Pat” McGillic and raised four children, Linda, Bob, Patty, and Mark, and made their home in St. Helens, OR. Joanie worked as a legal secretary for attorney Agnus Peterson for many years. The family enjoyed many weekends on the Columbia River and beach time at Ilwaco, WA, where they had a charter fishing boat.
Joanie later moved to Seattle and worked for Boeing, where she met and married her love, Ivan Child, in 1983. They both retired in 1991 and made their summer home in Woodburn, OR, and wintered in Surprise, AZ, where they enjoyed golfing, square dancing, and Mariners baseball. Spring Break in Surprise every year was a highlight for her grandkids! Swimming, biking, pickleball, driving the golf cart, and Grandma’s cooking were favorites! Joanie enjoyed games, golfing, square dancing, and especially cooking for friends and family.
We all loved her pork roast and homemade applesauce! She will be missed!
Joanie leaves behind her loving husband of 40 years, Ivan; her children, Linda Cooper, Bob McGillic (Claire), and Patty Anderson; her stepchildren, Andy Child, Jay Child, Lisa Cardillo (Rich), Todd Child, and Yana Scollard; her immediate grandchildren, Chris Cooper, Casey Cooper (Tammi), Patrick McGillic (Karen), Jay Anderson (Kelsee), and Lisa Anderson; plus her six great-grandchildren, Noah Cooper, Christian Machado-Snyder, Charlie and John McGillic, Jackson and Lucas Anderson.
Joanie was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Mary Bradley; sister, Deloris Clark; ex-husband, Pat McGillic; a son, Mark McGillic; sons-in-law, Jerry Cooper and Mark Anderson; plus numerous other family and dear friends. She was a member of Faith Bible Church in Milton-Freewater, OR.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the team at Cascade Memory Care and Walla Walla Hospice for their support in her final days.
A private service will be at a later date.
