Jane Elizabeth (Betty) Myers,
passed away Sept. 27, just hours after
her 97th birthday at the Abundant
Life Elderly Care Adult Family Home
in Bellevue Wash.
She was born just north of Waitsburg in Huntsville,
Wash., on Sept. 26, 1919, to Wade H. and Edith (Corbett)
Wolfe. She graduated from Waitsburg High
School in 1937, and attended Kelsey Baird Secretarial
School in Spokane in 1938.
She married her husband of nearly 65 years, Raymond
Eugene (Gene) Myers in 1941. She worked as
assistant postmaster at Waitsburg, from 1944-1945,
and was secretary at Interior Grocery from 1951-
1952 in Walla Walla. She then worked for her husband
at Edison Grade School, as a secretary from
1961-1963. After that she became the attendance
officer at Walla Walla High School from 1963, until
her retirement in 1982. As attendance officer at Wa-
Hi, she became proficient at recognizing authentic
parent signatures from forged ones, much to the dismay
of generations of high school students, including
her own son who attended high school while she
was there.
After retirement, Gene and Betty traveled throughout
the northwest in their trailer, logging many happy
hours sitting by a river or looking out over mountain
valleys. Betty also worked on the election board
after her retirement. Throughout her life she was
active at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and St. Anne’s
Guild, the Association of Educational Office Personnel,
and the Elks #287 Wheelers.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law,
Keith and Roberta Myers of Redmond, Wash.; her
sister, Ruth Axelson-Wolfe of Spokane; and several
nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by
her parents; husband Gene; three brothers, and two
sisters.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 11,
at 10 a.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church with graveside
services afterward at Blue Mountain Memorial
Gardens. Viewing and visitation will be held on Oct.
10, from 4-7 p.m. at Herring Groseclose Funeral
Home. Friends and family are invited to sign the online
guest book at www.herringgroseclose.com.
