Jim Smith “Smitty”, 64, of College Place, Washington left us all too soon on February 5, 2014.
Jim graduated in 1968 from Mac-Hi where he played sports and met many lifelong friends. Jim graduated from Eastern Oregon University and began teaching & coaching in Idaho. Jim moved back to the Walla Walla Valley after his father’s death to be with & help his mother.
Jim then began his career as a teacher & coach at Walla Walla High School during which time he earned his Master’s degree. 27 years as a Blue Devil brought Jim many fond memories, friendships & laughter. Jim was the defensive coordinator for the Blue Devils varsity football team. He was the head boy’s golf coach, coach of the freshman A squad boys basketball team as well as the varsity girls’ basketball coach for many years. Jim loved to laugh, tell stories & he was a wonderful listener. He was so proud of “his kids” (Wa-Hi students & athletes).
Jim is survived by his aunt, Diane Biggs of Milton Freewater. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, James Everett & Natelle (Teddy) Jean Smith. Jim’s favorite Bible verse was Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” This truly was Jim’s mantra in life…..HOPE.
