Jim was born in Dayton, to Leo and Marcia (Eager) Harting. He spent all of his growing-up years in and around Dayton. In 1959, the family moved to the farm on the Whetstone. Jim always loved the farm and farming.
After graduation from high school in 1965, he went to community college. In May 1967, he was drafted in the U.S. Army and spent most of his time Germany. He was in an armored division and the motor pool. After returning from the Army, he worked on different farms.
On June 30, 1977, he married Loraine Scott, in Lewiston, Idaho. They had 38 wonderful years together. In 1981, Jim bought a seed cleaner, a 1971 Ford cab over truck, and set up a portable cleaner. He was in the seed cleaning business in Washington, Oregon and Idaho until December of 2014. He worked for many farmers who became good friends. Thanks to the DeRuwes, Jim and Loraine saw a lot of the world, trips they all enjoyed.
