James Henry Appling, 88, passed away
surrounded by his family, Jan. 4, 2016,
at Providence St. Mary Medical Center.
Mr. Appling was born April 1, 1927, to Omar Ray and
Gladys Emmer Hollingshead Appling in Walla Walla.
He attended Green Park and Edison grade schools
and graduated from Walla Walla High School in the
class of 1945. He was drafted into the Army and
served in the Aleutian Islands at Adak.
He married Betty Brown on June 24, 1954. He worked
for the Union Pacific Railroad, Bill Ruther Well Drilling,
Lott Supply and buying the pump department
in 1963, and opened Appling Pump and Irrigation
Service and retired in 2003.
He spent 44 years with
Fire District #4, being a volunteer and commissioner.
His other affiliations include Walla Walla Gun Club,
Walla Walla VFW and the Independent Order of Forresters.
James was an excellent wood worker and enjoyed
gardening and traveling with his wife, Betty, to
places like Alaska’s inside passage and the Panama
Canal.
He is survived by his wife, Betty at home; daughter,
Rene (Dave) Simmons of Vancouver, Wash.; son, Dan
(Barb) Appling of San Tan Valley, Ariz.; six grandchildren;
seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces
and nephews.
James is preceded in death by his
son, Chuck Appling; two sisters, Opal McInroe and
Ella Mae Miller.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday,
Jan. 7, 2016, at Grace United Methodist Church in
Walla Walla with Rev. Zach Taylor officiating. Concluding
services and interment will follow at Blue
Mountain Memorial Gardens in College Place.
