Harlan “Tony” Hulce passed away on April 30, 2026. Born in South Dakota and later making his home in Waitsburg, Washington, Tony lived a life rooted in hard work, family, laughter, and a deep love for the outdoors.
Tony dedicated 33 years to the Umatilla National Forest Service. His work was based in the forests he loved so much, and during the summer months he proudly served as a firefighter, helping battle wildfires and protect communities and natural lands. His dedication, courage, and strong work ethic earned the respect of those who knew and worked beside him.
Outside of work, Tony felt most at home in nature. He loved fishing, being outdoors, and spending time surrounded by the beauty of the natural world. In his younger years, he rode trial motorbikes and continued his love for riding motorcycles well into his later years.
Tony was known for his incredible sense of humor, his kind heart, and the way he could make people laugh. Above all, he loved his family deeply. He was a proud father to five children: Cali Hulce, Cara Hulce, Contessa Montgomery, Nick O’Meara, and Marnee Contreras. He was also a loving grandfather to six grandchildren, all of whom meant the world to him.
In 2018, Tony met the love of his life, Barbara Carpenter. They married in 2019 and shared nearly eight wonderful years together. Their love was evident to everyone around them, and he adored her completely.
Tony will be deeply missed and forever remembered by his wife, Barbara; his children and grandchildren; extended family; and the many friends whose lives were made brighter by knowing him.
