H. James (Jim) Herres, age 80, was called home to be with his Lord on Sunday, March 4th, 2012. He died at Deaconess Medical Center in Spokane, WA, after a sudden series of cardiac arrests.
He was born June 1, 1931 in Pomeroy, Washington to the late Michael P. and Mary (Kucklick) Herres. He started grade school at Holy Rosary Catholic School in Pomeroy, Washington and then the family moved to Walla Walla, WA in 1942 where he attended Saint Patrick’s Catholic School and graduated from Saint Patrick’s High School in 1949. Jim served in the U.S. Army Heavy Mortar Company, and received the Korean Service Medal with 3 Bronze Stars, United Nations Service Medal and Combat Infantry Badge. On May 1, 1954, he was united in marriage to the love of his life Marilyn J. Page in Walla Walla, WA and together raised their six children in Pomeroy,WA.
Jim and Marilyn made their home for 57 years in Pomeroy, WA until moving in October of 2011 to Cheney, WA to be near family. Jim spent 38 years of his professional life at Farm & Home Supply and Ferd Herres Chevrolet as a business partner with his brother Ferd Herres. Jim retired in 1996 and enjoyed traveling with Marilyn and the Heritage Club members, working in his garden and orchard, special projects in the church and community along with time with their family and friends.
Jim was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Pomeroy, WA, serving numerous years on the church and school council. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1460 serving as Secretary for 52 years and a member of the 4th Degree Knights. He was a member of the Pomeroy VFW Strain-Miller Post 2351 and Lewiston Elk’s Lodge No. 896. Jim started the first Pomeroy Special Olympics in 1985 and in the years following coached and chaperoned along with Marilyn supporting their son Jimmy and other Pomeroy residents.
Jim is survived by his wife, Marilyn of 57 years and his children, David and Kathy Herres, Walla Walla, WA, Judy and Tim Hahner, Fairfield, WA, Tim and Debbie Herres, Newport,WA , Jennifer and Dan Spisak, Cheney, WA., Jimmy Herres, Kennewick, WA , Edward and Lynn Herres, Cheney, WA; 10 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary Ann Herres, Spokane,WA , two brothers, Joe Herres, Walla Walla, WA, Richard Herres, Pomeroy, WA, two sister-in-laws, Audrey Herres of Walla Walla, WA, Mary Page, Silverdale, WA and two brother-in-laws, David and Kathy Page, Redding CA, Thomas and Maida Page, Walla Walla, WA. He is survived by numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six brothers, Mike, Leonard, John, Herman, Hubert and Ferd.
Funeral services for H. James Herres will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 19th, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 474 6th Street, Pomeroy, WA followed by burial at Holy Rosary Cemetery. Rosary will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 19th, at Holy Rosary Church. Relatives and friends are welcome at the Herring- Groseclose Funeral Home, 315 W Alder St, Walla Walla, WA for visitation on Sunday, March 18th from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and at the church in Pomeroy, WA, on Monday, from 10:00 a.m. until the hour of the rosary. The family suggest memorials be made to Holy Rosary Catholic Church Anniversary Fund or Washington Special Olympics through the funeral home.
The family would like to thank the staff of Sessions Village and Cheney Care Center, Dr. Patel and ICU staff of Deaconess Medical for all of their care and support.
