Gregory Martin passed away peacefully at home on May 17, 2026, surrounded by family and close friends. He was 82 years old.
Greg was born on December 12, 1943, in Walla Walla, Washington, a community he remained deeply connected to throughout his life. He graduated from De Sales High School, where he formed lifelong friendships and developed a strong sense of community that would guide him throughout his years.
Greg married Anita Gatzke in 1963; they later divorced. He went on to marry Sherry Long in 1977, and they shared many meaningful years together until her passing in March 2004. In his later years, Greg found companionship with long-time friend Shirley Nibler, who remained by his side until his passing.
A proud and industrious member of his hometown, Greg was one of the original owners of Martin Field Airport, contributing to an important part of local history. He worked for various industrial businesses in the area before retiring from L&G Ranch Supply.
Greg had a lifelong love of the outdoors. As a young man, he volunteered with the Spout Springs and Mount Hood Ski Patrol and spent time scuba diving in Puget Sound. He enjoyed fly fishing, camping, and gardening. Some of his most treasured moments were spent camping along the Lostine River, a place that held a special meaning for him.
Greg was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Penny Martin; his brother, Robert Martin; and his wife, Sherry Martin.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Perrilee and Richard Johnston; his grandchild, Erin Johnston; and many close friends who will remember him fondly.
Greg will be remembered for his warm presence, steady strength, and the lasting impact he made on those around him.
At the family’s request, no public services will be held.
In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make contributions to Walla Walla Catholic Schools or Providence St. Mary Regional Cancer Center through the Herring Groseclose Funeral Home, 315 W Alder St, Walla Walla, WA 99362.
