Gerald James Gradwohl

Gerald James Gradwohl passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, December fifth. Jerry was born the second of October, 1924 in Worland, Wyoming to Lydia Kinsfather-Cecil & Alex Gradwohl. Jerry moved to Walla Walla at a very young age and graduated from Walla Walla High School in 1942.

He enrolled at Whitman College in the fall of 1942, completing one semester, and then enlisted in the US Army in December of 1942. Although achieving sharpshooter status, his occupational specialty while enlisted was that of a Medical Aidman. Jerry served with the 99th infantry in European Theatre of WWII participating in the Battle of the Bulge. Along with other medals of honor, Jerry was a recipient of a Purple Heart and was discharged in the spring of 1945.

Once home, he returned to Whitman College where he earned his degree in 1949 while majoring in Mathematics. After graduating, he went to work in the family business, Gradwohl’s Furniture, and continued working with Allen’s Furniture, Russell’s Furniture and finishing his career with Kurt’s Decorative Service. As an expert carpet and window covering installer, Jerry worked in many family homes & businesses in the Walla Walla area.

Jerry was an avid pool player & bowler. In 1984, he was the “A” singles champion in the Walla Walla Valley Bowling Association City Tournament. Jerry loved spending time with his family at barbecues and holiday get togethers. He spent many years meeting up with old friends to drink coffee, watch & debate sports.

He is survived by his sister-in-law, Anne Gradwohl; his niece, Sharon Moramarco; his nephew, Keith Gradwohl; two great nieces; two great nephews and twin great great nephews. Jerry was preceded in death by his mother, Lydia and his brother, Norman “Babe” Gradwohl.

The graveside funeral service will be held on Monday, December 15, 2014 at Mountain View Cemetery at 1:00 PM with Rev. Linda Weistaner officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice through the Herring Groseclose Funeral Home, 315 W. Alder, Walla Walla, WA.
