Fred W. Hair Ii

June 1, 1934 — July 11, 2024

College Place

Frederic William Hair II, 90, died July 11, 2024, at his home in College Place, WA. Fred was born on June 1, 1934, to Lloyd and Jessie (Taylor) Hair, in Walla Walla, WA. His parents and his younger sister, Dorothy Reavis, preceded him in death.

Fred grew up on his family’s Clyde-area farm and attended Clyde School until World War II started. Then, he and Dorothy stayed with their grandparents in Walla Walla during the week and attended Green Park School through 8th grade. He graduated from Prescott High School in 1954. Upon graduation, he joined the United States Air Force and was stationed in England and Maine. After his discharge in 1958, he returned to farming with his dad.

He met his future wife, Cheryl Epp, in June 1961 and they were married April 28, 1962. They raised three children, Vicki, Jim and Anne, and were married for 62 years.

When he retired from farming in 1993, he continued to haul grain with his semi, and drive tractor for neighbors. He was a volunteer firefighter with Walla Walla County Fire District #1 for 20 years and served as District #1 Fire Commissioner from 1973 to 2001.

Fred enjoyed boating and snowmobiling, building model planes, collecting model trains, and reading National Geographic and airplane magazines. A lifetime highlight for Fred and Cheryl were the several cruises that they went on together.

His memberships included the Washington State Association of Wheat Growers, the Elks, Masons, American Legion, Lions and Shrine Clubs, and he enjoyed pulling the Shriners’ calliope in various local parades. He was a faithful member of St Paul’s Episcopal Church, having been baptized there in 1983.

Fred is survived by his wife, Cheryl; his children, Vicki Ueckert (Andrew), Jim Hair (Brenda), and Anne Hair; grandchildren, Jeremy Ueckert (Paula), Laura Jones (Paul), Amy Bates (Kaddo), Stella Hair-Morin and Opal Hair-Morin; great-granddaughter, Teagan Bates; and his beloved dog, Penny. He was a faithful provider, husband, father, grandfather and friend and will be greatly missed.
