Eugene Norman Soper

Eugene N. Soper, 87, passed away on January 2, 2013 at St. Mary Medical Center from Bronchial Pneumonia.

He was born on October 7, 1925 in Pomeroy, Washington to John & Ethel Benson Soper. He attended local area schools, Whitman College & University of Washington. Afterwards, he took over his father’s business, Soper’s Leather Goods, and enlarged the store 3 times.

He married Betty Egg on September 17, 1966 in Walla Walla, Washington and together they did some world traveling. His favorite pastime was watching football. He was past President of the Walla Walla Symphony. He was especially proud of his 15 music scholarships at Walla Walla University.

Eugene is survived by his wife, Betty, at the home; a daughter & son-in-law, Kay & Richard Mello of MA; grandchildren, Jody & husband Tom Brooks of RI & John Mello of MA; great grandsons, Thomas & Cole Brooks of RI; 2 brothers, Ralph Soper of Bellevue, WA & Leroy Soper of Seattle, WA; sisters-in-law, Mary Soper of Walla Walla, Jan & husband John Heathman of Hartline, WA and numerous nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents & 1 brother, Keith Soper.

Viewing & visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 8, 2012 from 1:00 PM until 7:00 PM & Wednesday, January 9, 2013 from 9:00 AM until 11:00 AM at the Herring Groseclose Funeral Home, 315 W. Alder, Walla Walla, WA. The Memorial Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, January 9, 2013 at 2:00 PM at the First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Albert Gillin officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church or charity of choice through the funeral home.
