Heaven received our sweet mother, Esther Rose Loos Overturf, on Wednesday, May 16, 2012. She was born to Oberlin and Lois Osborn Loos on July 3, 1922, at Deer Harbor, Wash.
Esther lived on Orcas Island and in Seattle then moved with family at age 3 to Walla Walla, where she
met the love of her life, Don Overturf. They married on Feb. 5, 1939, and made Walla Walla their home. They had five daughters who led charmed lives because they
were loved and cherished by kind-hearted, fun-loving and contented parents.
Mother was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church for almost 70 years, serving on boards, in women’s ministry and choir. She was a Blue Bird
leader, PTA member, room mother, food bank volunteer and election board worker.
Mother was a fantastic homemaker and our home was a favorite place for many. She was an “errand girl” for Daddy’s dental lab business.
Following his death in 1978, she worked in the WWCC library and as a cook at Smith Nursing Home. She enjoyed spending time with family, friends and her cats,
gardening, going to the ocean, an annual trip with her brother Robert, playing cards, reading, writing letters, attending her church and children’s and grandchildren’s activities.
We miss her but know she no longer suffers and is now with Jesus, Daddy and other loved ones. She met life’s challenges with grace and dignity, leaving us a legacy of love and deep commitment.
Esther is survived by her daughters, Sharron Godfrey, Donna Ambs, Judy (Ken) Jurgensen, Penny (Ron) Knight, Debi Overturf; grandchildren, John (Shelly) Buff, Joe (Sue) Ambs, Kevin (Anne) Ambs, Don (Donden) Ambs, Tammy Lauterberg, Lisa (Ron) Crow,
Kirsten Schober, Trevor (Akiko) Schober, Mary Esther (John) Palumbo, Anna (Rafa) Hernandez, Alison (Jeff) Katz, and Katie (Brian) Rosenkranz; 27 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great grandchildren; brother Robert
Loos and his wife Joan; brother-in-law and sister-inlaw, Clancy and Mary Lou Overturf; numerous nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her
husband; mother and father; grandparents; sisters, Myrtle and Betty Loos and Lucille Hubbs; three sisters-in-law and four brothers-in-law.
Viewing and visitation will be from 2-7 p.m. at Herring
Groseclose Funeral Home, 315 W. Alder, on Wednesday, May 23, 2012. A celebration of Esther’s life will be held at 11 a.m. at Grace United Methodist Church, 1520 Pleasant St., on Thursday, May 24, 2012, followed by a
graveside service at Mountain View Cemetery.
