Elizabeth "Sue" Gray

Sue Gray, born Elizabeth Sue Gehlhausen, 88, passed to her great reward on August 20, 2026, surrounded by her loved ones in the comfort of the Veterans Home in Walla Walla, WA.

Born in Evansville, IN, on August 19, 1938, she was raised in Livingston, MT, with her parents, Albert and Nora, and her siblings, Bill, Barbara, Larry, Tim, and Mike. Sue attended Sacred Heart Academy and then Gonzaga University, where she met the love of her life and her husband of 66 years, Willard Paul “Bill” Gray.

Bill and Sue moved to Walla Walla after they married, where they raised six children: Monica (Pace), Bill, Barbara (Kenny), Lisa (Whalen), Tom, and Jennifer (Herrin), in a loving home. She was a nurturing presence to so many in Walla Walla. Sue loved her community and sought to help others whenever possible.

Sue was a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Her heart and devotion belonged to her family. She made Walla Walla a better place to live through her strong dedication to children in need. Among her many talents and interests were playing bridge, working in Walla Walla schools, quilting, volunteering at Birthright, and her devotion to the Catholic Church. Her faith was central to raising her children, loving others, and giving of herself to the community. Her home was always welcoming to anyone in need. Her big smile, contagious laugh, and legacy of fun, caring, and love will never be forgotten.

The family wishes to sincerely thank the nurses and staff at the Walla Walla Veterans Home for the love and care they provided to Sue during her time there.

Sue was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Bill. She is survived by her brothers, Tim and Mike, as well as her six children, 17 grandchildren, and 23 great-grandchildren.

There will be a Rosary and Vigil for Sue on Thursday, September 10, 2026, at 4:00 PM at the Chapel of the Herring Funeral Home. Her funeral Mass will be held on Friday, September 11, 2026, at 10:00 AM at Assumption Parish, followed by graveside services at Mountain View Cemetery.
