Edward Ongers passed away March 4, 2016, surrounded by the love of his family and friends. He was in the care of hospice and passed from a short battle with cancer.
Ed was born July 31, 1951, to Mary and Petier Ongers in Apeldoorn, Netherlands. He immigrated to the U.S. in February 1957 with his parents and two of his brothers. A year later a fourth brother was born.
After a divorce, Mary married Byron Eastman, the father who raised the boys. Ed then had an additional two brothers by his parents, Mary and Byron.
Ed graduated Walla Walla High School in 1969 and went to work for L. P. Sawmill, where he worked for 10 years. He married Denise Monthei on Nov. 24, 1972. At Ed’s suggestion they renewed their vows 10 years
later.
Ed worked for Donovan Farms for 12 years, and then Konen Rock Products for a year, before hiring on with Tidewater, a job he took great pride in for 22 years. He retired in 2014.
Ed was a member of the Christ Community Fellowship church. A man of many talents, he enjoyed camping, fishing and time at the cabin, motorcycle trips, reading and cooking... he was an excellent cook,
and in his spare time remodeling his home. He loved the challenge of projects and was a master woodworker. Ed was also known for his sweet tooth.
Ed was preceded in death by mother, Mary Eastman and father, Petier Ongers. He is survived by wife, Denise Ongers; sons, Shawn (Jennifer) Ongers, Cory Ongers, Eddie Ongers; father, Byron Eastman; brothers,
Gary (Vickie) Ongers, Tony (Debbie) Ongers, John (Cindy) Ongers, Rocky (Stephanie) Eastman,Marty (Jennifer) Eastman; and numerous grandchildren and nieces and nephews. In 1991-92 Ed and Denise hosted Venancio Berretto Jr. from Brazil as a high school exchange student, and considered Venny to be family as well.
Ed was a hardworking family man who touched and shaped many lives. If the measure of a man is counted in the love of family and friends, Ed was a wealthy man indeed. He will be missed by many and will live
on in the hearts and smiles of those left behind.
Services will be held on March 14 at 4:30 p.m. at Christ Community Fellowship, 3170 Peppers Bridge Road, Walla Walla. Memorials may be made to Walla Walla Community Hospice in care of the Herring Funeral
Home, 315 W. Alder, Walla Walla, WA 99362.
