Douglas Carl Smith

Douglas Carl Smith, born January 31, 1948, passed away on August 7, 2026, following a hard-fought illness.

Doug was born in Walla Walla to George and Mildred Smith. An identical twin, Doug and Dale were a pair along with older brother Lynn “Chet”. Doug participated in 4-H as a youth, exhibiting Angus cattle. In high school Doug was a member of FFA and enjoyed hands-on trades courses, continuing to show Angus cattle. He enjoyed all outdoor activities with his family, traveling every summer, fishing and hunting. Doug and Dale drove their Scout, along with friends’ rigs, all over the Blue Mountains. Doug graduated from Walla Walla High School in 1966 and went on to Washington State University to complete an Animal Science degree, graduating in 1970. Doug had many fond memories at WSU working and living at the beef center. During college, Doug met and fell in love with Sandi Christensen. The two were wed on February 1,1970, in Walla Walla.

Doug had many jobs all related to agriculture and mechanics before his health forced him to retire. He was an excellent mechanic, especially on combines and balers. His favorite job was operating a wheat combine during harvest. In his retirement, Doug was a part-time mechanic for his son’s landscaping business. Through his work many friendships were made around Doug’s workbench, with conversations filled with laughter and love. Doug was a volunteer firefighter with Walla Walla County Fire District 4 for 21 years and served as a 4-H leader.

Doug was a doting father, involved in his children’s activities. It was common to see Doug on the sidelines of many sports games and outside of the ring at livestock shows. He supported their efforts and shared his expertise. Doug shared his love of the outdoors with his children, taking them camping and fishing during the summer, and hunting in the fall. He was proud of his children and grandchildren. For some time, Doug packed a small picture album with him and would happily share pictures of his kids and young grandkids.

Doug is survived by his wife, Sandi; his children, Steven, Nichole (Cody Appleford), Kevin (Chelsey), and Jessica (Mike Johnson); four grandchildren, Baylee, Kinzey, Hunter and Quincy; and his brothers, Chet Lynn Smith and Dale Smith (Gloria).

A family gathering is planned to celebrate Doug’s life.
