Dorothy Helen Palmer went to be with her Lord on Feb. 8, 2015. Dorothy was born to Frank and Gladys Hardin on April 15, 1917, in Dayton.
She attended Dayton public schools, graduating in 1935. After completing beauty school in Spokane she returned to Dayton to open her own beauty salon. Several years later she married Howard Nichols of Kentucky. Howard was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps., working in Dayton.
Dorothy had seven children, a daughter and six sons. Her first son, Gary, was stillborn and her second son, Richard, was killed in action in Vietnam in 1967. She remarried in 1968 to Rodney Palmer and enjoyed a wonderful life with him until his death in 1982. After living in Roseburg, Ore., for several years she moved to Walla Walla in 1989 to be near her son, Dennis.
Dorothy loved the Lord and was a member of Blue Mountain Community Church for many years.
She is survived by daughter, Julie Hawkins of Anniston, Ala.; sons, David Nichols of Long Beach, Calif., Douglas Nichols of Walla Walla, Dennis Nichols of West Richland and Steven Nichols of Phoenix, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; four great great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her two sons, Gary and Richard; her parents; and siblings, Hazel Bell, Phyllis Nielsen and Stanley Hardin.
Visitation is Thursday, Feb. 12, 2015, from 4-7 p.m. and a chapel service is Friday, Feb. 13, 2015, at 10 a.m. Both will be held at Herring Groseclose Funeral Home, 315 W. Alder. Interment will be at Dayton City Cemetery.
