Donald Audley Hanson passed away on July 11, 2023, at the age of 96. He was born to Audley and Pearl Hanson on December 13, 1926, and raised in Touchet, Washington. Following graduation, he served in the Army during WWII, stationed in the Aleutian Islands. Upon returning home, Don attended Whitman College participating in football and baseball. He then met and married Edna Wiedmer. They welcomed two children: a daughter Susan and a son Gary. Don worked as a salesman for Lehigh Cement Company for 34 years and retired in 1989. Never a loner, Don enjoyed fishing, hunting, boating, camping, and attending athletic events with family and friends.
Don is survived by his wife, Edna, of 71 years; daughter, Susan Hanson; son, Gary Hanson (Terri); grandchildren, Megan Watts (Travis) and Jake Hanson (Bronwyn); great-grandchildren, Grifan Watts and Kellen Watts; younger sister, Barbara Cherryholmes; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and older sister, Mildred Pentecost.
Don experienced several health issues in the last few years, including cancer. His death came after sustaining a head injury caused by a fall.
A viewing will be Monday, July 24, 2023, from 2:00-5:00 PM at the Chapel of the Herring Funeral Home in Walla Walla. A graveside service will be at Mountain View Cemetery in Walla Walla, on Tuesday, July 25, 2023, at 10:30 AM, followed by a Celebration of Life at the Walla Walla Country Club at 12:00 PM to include a light lunch.
