Delia Cisneros Surratt (nee Hernandez) was born September 21, 1950, in Raymondville, Texas, to Alfonso and Hermenegilda Hernandez, the 2nd of 11 children. She traveled around the country with her family as they worked in a variety of agricultural jobs, learning the value of hard work along the way. The family eventually settled in Walla Walla, where Delia graduated from Walla Walla High School. After attending cosmetology school, she worked in that field for several years, eventually moving on to secretarial work.
She met her husband while they both worked for Blue Mountain Action Council, marrying David Surratt on March 22, 1975. She later worked in a variety of support roles for the local Community Service Office of DSHS. Her final working life was spent supporting the English as a Second Language program at Garrison Middle School as a bilingual instructional aide. Wonderously, one of her students, now an RN, was a part of her care team during her final illness.
She loved art and painted a number of beautiful paintings, entering a few of them in the local fair, where she won multiple ribbons. She most loved spending time with her family. She gave birth to two beautiful daughters, Erin and Kelli. They, in turn, gifted her with five grandchildren and (so far) two great-grandchildren. She was happiest when surrounded by her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Hermenegilda; and her brothers, Juan (Tony), Felix, and Adam. She is survived by her husband, David; her daughters (Delia) Erin Hubbard and Kelli Surratt; her grandchildren, Dylan Russell, Roman Hubbard, Ashtan Hubbard, Angel Leija, and Cecelia Leija; her great-grandchildren, Isabella Beltran and Camilla Beltran; as well as her siblings, Maria Balderas, Rita Vasquez, Lupe Perez, Virginia Hernandez, Frank Hernandez, and Joseph Hernandez.
She was a devout Catholic and carried her strong faith with her throughout her life. Delia passed away Sunday, May 21, 2023, after a brief and sudden illness.
A Rosary for Delia will be prayed at the Chapel of the Herring Funeral Home (315 W Alder Street, Walla Walla) on Tuesday, May 30, 2023, at 6:00 pm. Mass will be held the following day, May 31, 2023, at 9:30 am, at St. Patrick Catholic Church (408 W. Poplar, Walla Walla). All are invited.
