Wayne was born at home on Nov. 9,1924, in Pomeroy to John Gilman Smith
and Doris Lewis Smith. He passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side on Feb. 10, 2016.
Wayne graduated in 1943 from Pomeroy High School, where he played football, basketball and baseball and played tuba in the band. In October 1943 he was drafted into the military and was assigned to the Navy as a signalman. He was
discharged when the war ended and then attended Washington State University. After leaving college he became the telephone man in Dayton.
He married Doris McQueen on Dec. 29, 1951. They had three sons, Brent (Pilar), Brian (Bridgid), and Bruce (Joy). During their 13 years in Dayton, he was a Boy Scout leader, Kiwanis president, on the City Council, Sunday school superintendent and VFW commander. The family moved to Walla Walla in 1967 and he retired from the phone company in 1986.
After almost 52 years of marriage, Doris predeceased him in death in October 2004. Wayne was blessed in a second marriage on July 8, 2005, to Ann Lee French, with whom he shared over 10 amazing years of travel
and family adventures.
Besides his sons, he is also survived by siblings, Corleen Fisher and Jack Smith
(Mary); four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
His family would like to thank their special friend and one of Wayne’s beloved caregivers, Pierre Remillard.
Services will be held on Feb. 20, 2016, at 2 p.m. at Pioneer United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Walla Walla Community
