Winter Park

David C. Houck, of Winter Park, FL, passed away tragically on January 2, 2025, in Augusta, GA. Born on April 1, 2002, in Gejiu, China, David was adopted by John and Laurie Houck in 2004. David spent his formative years, going to preschool and attending Berney Elementary with his best friend, Jackie Brick, who was like a sister to him.

As a child, David was passionate about karate and making paper swords for his preschool classmates, earning the title of Armorer. He had a love for reading, Greek mythology, drawing, building with LEGOs, and cooking. In middle school, he developed skills in archery, graphic design, and weightlifting, while also being active in Boy Scouts. His favorite summer activity was attending Camp Nuhop, in Ohio, a place where he found belonging and honed his fledgling leadership (and cooking) skills.

In 2022, David joined the United States Army, completing his basic training at Fort Sill, OK, and advanced training at Fort Gregg-Adams, VA. He was stationed at Fort Eisenhower, where he served as a Supply Specialist and company armorer with the Alpha Company, 297th Military Intelligence Battalion. At the time of his passing, he was preparing for Ranger Assessment and Selection Program (RASP) with Captain Allen Ransom, someone he considered a role model.

David's impact on those around him was evident in the heartfelt tributes from his fellow soldiers on February 19. SGT Shatwell, his supply sergeant, remembered David as a resourceful and dedicated soldier who quickly made friends and extended his friendship to everyone. SPC Sellars, a close friend, described David's unwavering support and humor, describing him as a brother. LTC Cisneros highlighted David's spirit of service, kindness, and dedication, recalling his infectious smile and the way he made everyone feel valued.

David is survived by his loving parents, John and Laurie Houck; his grandparents, Judith A. Deal of Walla Walla and George and Lou Anne Houck of Olympia; Uncle Michael and Aunt Sharon Deal and Aunt Catherine Houck and Uncle David Rolph; and five cousins. He will be deeply missed forever and always in our hearts.

A memorial family and friends service will be held to honor David's life. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to: Camp Nuhop, Attn: Trevor Dunlap, 1077 Township Rd 2916, Perrysville, OH 44864.
